About Alexander City Housing Authority

The Housing Authority of the City of Alexander City (ACHA) was chartered as a non-profit corporation in 1966 by the State of Alabama to provide decent, safe and sanitary housing to the low-income citizens of Alexander City. By contract with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as provided by the U.S. Housing Act of 1937, the Authority, a Public Housing Agency (PHA), is governed by a local 5 member Board of Commissioners. The Commissioners are appointed by the Mayor and each serve a 5 year term. The Board elects a chairman and vice-chairman each year at the annual meeting.

ACHA operates 477 public housing units and 265 Section 8 Voucher units within Alexander City assisting about 1500 people or about 10% of the area population. Funding comes from HUD, local rental receipts, investments and grants. ACHA currently has 22 full-time and 4 part-time employees and a varying number of subcontractors who work in our Capital Fund Program. ACHA operates the Public Housing Program, the Housing Choice Voucher Program, Family Self Sufficiency Program, a Youth and Adult Services Program, a Homeownership Program, and a ROSS/Elderly program .

The mission of ACHA is to provide the necessary number of affordable, decent, safe and sanitary dwelling units within its jurisdiction; to administer, professionally and accurately, the programs authorized by the Board of Commissioners and Congress; and to professionally maintain the property that has been developed throughout its intended useful life. ACHA accomplishes this by serving the needs of our residents on a daily basis and providing opportunities to those who wish to take advantage of the programs we offer.

HUD recognized ACHA as a "High Performer", based on the Public Housing Assessment Program which is the measuring stick used to evaluate housing authorities across the nation. ACHA has scored above 90 out of 100 consistently every year in the four categories evaluated by HUD: Physical, Financial, Management and Resident Satisfaction. This high performer status enables ACHA to capitalize on certain bonuses given by HUD which benefit the residents of ACHA.
